2019/20 Season: A record year for Matt Laurie Racing & the brilliant return of ALFA ORO

Matt Laurie Racing has had its most successful racing season yet, with 48 winners from 259 starters; an overall average of 18.53%.

In fact, we have maintained a 19% average over the past 2 years. This is a result of an enormous team effort and continued support from our loyal band of owners.

One incredibly special highlight this year, was the successful return to racing in April for then 4yo gelding Alfa Oro having previously sustained a condylar fracture to his right fore cannon bone in August 2018.

After successful surgery by the highly skilled veterinary surgeons & team at U-Vet Werribee Equine Centre and 20 months of careful care and rehabilitation, Alfa Oro had his first start back for a 2nd placing on a heavy, rain affected track at Pakenham in April 2020 with Ben Melham on board.

This was followed by a succession of four super wins including two at Pakenham over 1200m, a thrilling, long-neck gusty win at Flemington over 1100m and a dominant 2.2 length win at Caulfield also over 1100m with Ben Melham piloting on all 4 occasions.

To have Alfa Oro fully recover from such a devastating injury was reward enough; to witness him at his outstanding, galloping best was truly remarkable and incredibly moving for all involved.

We'd like to thank our dedicated team and every owner that has entrusted us to care for their horse over this time.

Below is a collection of our finest wins from the 2019/20 racing season, including Alfa Oro's 2 metropolitan victories.
